Understanding the Impact of Trauma
Human sex trafficking leaves deep and lasting scars on survivors, affecting every aspect of their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, Survivors often endure:
- Complex trauma, resulting from prolonged abuse and manipulation.
- Distrust in relationships, stemming from exploitation by those they thought they could rely on.
- Mental health challenges, such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
A trauma-informed approach is essential to address these challenges, helping survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
What is Trauma-Informed Care?
Trauma-informed care is an empathetic and evidence-based approach that acknowledges the profound impact of trauma and prioritizes safety, healing, and empowerment. It is grounded in five core principles:
- Safety – Creating environments where survivors feel physically and emotionally secure.
- Trustworthiness and Transparency – Building trust through honesty, consistency, and clear communication.
- Peer Support – Connecting survivors with individuals who share similar experiences.
- Collaboration and Empowerment – Engaging survivors as active participants in their recovery journey.
- Cultural Humility – Recognizing and respecting the unique cultural backgrounds and identities of survivors.
