Levels of Involvement in Becoming a Foster/Adoptive Parent

Emergency Shelter Care

Shelter Care parents are available to provide immediate care for children who have been detained by Social Services. The goal is to provide care for the child until it is determined whether or not the child will remain a dependent of the court. If the child remains a dependent of the court, you may have the option of fostering the child long-term.

Respite Care

Respite parents are available to assist other Olive Crest foster families with short-term foster care. The most common length of time required of those who choose to be respite parents is two to seven days. The reason for respite care is to allow the foster family to travel or take care of family emergencies without upsetting the routine of their foster child.

Standard Foster Care

Traditional foster parents are available to care for children who are dependents of the court. The goal is to provide a safe, nurturing home for the child. While the child is healing in foster care, the child's biological parents are given a plan for reunification by the court system. The child will be reunited with his or her parents if the county deems appropriate.

ITFC parents require at least two years of foster parenting (or equivalent experience) before having an ITFC child placed in their home. The goal is to allow a severly affected child to heal in a loving home as opposed to a clinical environment. In addition to prior foster experience, ITFC families require extra training hours. Financial reimbursement is higher and additional in-home services are provided by an Olive Crest Support Counselor.

Foster/Adoption

Foster/Adoptive parents welcome foster children into their homes with potential for adoption. The goal of Olive Crest's foster/adopt program is to reduce the number of times a child moves while he or she is a dependent of the court. Foster/adopt families commit to care for their foster child until the child is unified or adopted. These children are generally over the age of three, part of a sibling set, and come from various ethnic backgrounds.
